CSIR-IIR Acquires Computational Infrastructure Systems

The Institute of Industrial Research (IIR) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has purchased a brand new set of information technology equipment to beef up the Institute’s computational infrastructural systems and meet the demand of the fourth Industrial revolution given the increasing technological innovations across the globe.

In an interview, Dr. Francis Boateng Agyenim, Director, CSIR-IIR, explained that owing to the paramount growth of big data and the internet of things, applications are becoming more intelligent and data-driven by the day. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become the backbone of most of our daily interactions and a necessity for businesses hence the need to procure these infrastructure to advance research and support the Institute’s operations.

The infrastructure acquired include an HP Workstation with the latest Nvidia Graphics Card-GeForce RTX 3090 (24 GB Dedicated), Processor Core i9-12900k, RAM – 64GB and a 3TB Storage Drive Capacity together with HP-ProLiant DL380 gen 10 Server with enhanced capacity and accessories to augment data processing and management. These are expected to be used for modelling and simulations of physical, chemical, biological and industrial systems among others.

AI has become a trend in the market, and rightly so. So much so AI is today a necessity for business. Today AI is the core of all intelligent applications. Accelerated computing is imperative and a way forward for all intelligent solutions and applications. At the backend of all smart applications is accelerated computing, which provides results in fractions of a second, with minimal latency. Accelerated Computing can help speed up work, Dr. Boateng Agyenim intimated.

CSIR-Institute of Industrial Research (CSIR-IIR) is mandated to undertake research in engineering design and prototyping, promoting emerging and adaptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum  science and Nano technologies  for applications in the extractive (oil and gas, precious minerals) mechatronics, automotive and the biomedical industries.

The institute continues to strive for excellence and offer support to industries in the areas of product development, research and quality assurance for wealth creation and enhanced productivity. The institute also continues to pursue smart design and manufacturing, advanced signal processing and communication engineering, AI and machine learning, virtual and augmented engineering, software production, computational engineering and biomedical and nanotechnology.

The infrastructure which was procured from the Institutes’ internally generated funds is expected to enhance the Institute’s computational capacity and capability to support industry in the area of advanced AI and computational applications.
